The Certified Forensic Accountant (CrFA®) competency framework defines the knowledge, skills, and professional values required of every forensic accounting professional. It serves as the foundation for learning, assessment, and ethical practice under CrFA® India.

This framework ensures that CrFA® professionals are not only technically proficient in forensic accounting and fraud investigation but also uphold the highest standards of integrity, objectivity, and accountability in every engagement.

Purpose of the Competency Framework

The CrFA® competency framework provides a structured roadmap for professional development. It helps individuals and organizations understand the core capabilities that define excellence in forensic accounting and financial investigation.

It guides:

  • Learners in identifying essential areas for growth and specialization.

  • Employers in assessing the professional readiness of CrFA® holders.

  • The public in recognizing the ethical and technical standards upheld by the designation.

Core Competency Areas

Every CrFA® professional is trained and assessed across four major domains of competence:

1. Technical & Analytical Competence

  • Understanding of accounting, auditing, and reporting systems

  • Mastery of forensic investigation methods and evidence analysis

  • Use of digital and data analytics tools for fraud detection

  • Application of quantitative reasoning to uncover financial irregularities

2. Ethical & Legal Competence

  • Adherence to the CrFA® Code of Ethics and professional standards

  • Familiarity with legal frameworks, litigation support, and regulatory compliance

  • Understanding of financial crime laws and ethical decision-making

  • Ability to maintain independence, confidentiality, and objectivity in practice

3. Communication & Reporting Competence

  • Preparation of clear, credible, and defensible forensic reports

  • Presentation of findings for legal, regulatory, or management review

  • Expert testimony and collaboration with legal teams

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for complex financial evidence
